Peace on Earth

Angel, dove or radiance, we all know this image as a symbol of peace. But it’s so much more. In the beating of wings is our heartbeat. In the purity of purpose is our wish. In the determination of deliverance is our goal: Peace on earth. Peace for all. Season's Greetings.

Red Car

In one of the hill towns we visited in Tuscany, where one winding street met another, we saw an old red car that looked as if it hadn’t moved in years. Perhaps the rosy wall and windowsill were slowly borrowing some of their colour from it as it sat, quiet and still, gradually surrendering its shine to the wind and rain.

Hosta

Hostas live most happily in the shade, but they always long for the light. These ones, from a local garden, seemed so eager to unfold, so intent on presenting themselves, that they almost appeared to be listening for the crackle and heat of the sun.

Lotus

Cherished for centuries, the lotus flower symbolizes beauty, purity, rebirth and enlightenment. It brings gorgeous light from the murky depths of a pond. This Georgia O’Keeffe-inspired painting hangs in a beautiful open-plan home on the shores of the Gulf Islands in British Columbia, Canada.

Koi

This painting is a little bit “coy” – not literally of koi, although they might perhaps swim in the cool water beneath the flowers. These were simple tulips, floating free instead of made to stand, swaying gently as they opened in the heat of the day and closed again at night.

Firenze

At once magnificent and intimate, the golden Firenze of centuries past is the canvas on which modern Florence paints itself each day. Here is ageless architecture, the gravity of Michelangelo’s David, and the glory of Botticelli’s Venus – steps from a tiny sidewalk bistro where we lingered for perfect gnocchi, wine and cappuccino.

Collection

A collection of paintings creates a different perspective. This one gathers images inspired by our travels in Italy and San Francisco, and by Georgia O’Keeffe. I see myself leaning into smooth curves and painting echoes of planes and shadows. Painting the light as texture. Dipping into shades so rich they fairly fall from the brush.

Hill Town

In the heat of the day in an Italian hill town, we found ourselves on a quiet, narrow street. The astonishing blue of the sky seemed to have been captured and melted into the glass of the window and the tiles of the façade, lifting the entire structure just a little closer to heaven.
